SF HINTS aims to enhance our current city-wide cancer control and prevention initiative, SF-CAN, with local administration of a health information seeking behavior survey with an emphasis on vulnerable populations. The primary goal is to better understand the extent to which populations with limited English proficiency and low health literacy have access to and use health information technology for their health communication needs.

Leveraging relationships with community-based partners, SF HINTS recruited over 1000 participants from diverse backgrounds. The survey was administered in four languages (English, Spanish, Mandarin, Cantonese) and included roughly equal proportions of non-English and English-speaking participants. Among the English-language participants, approximately half of participants are African American. These data advanced our understanding of cancer prevention preferences and behaviors, and informed targeted outreach efforts that are needed to address cancer control within this diverse population.
